Terminal 2 Baggage Claim Building Opens In July

Three brand-new carousels, each capable of handling baggage from two Boeing 737 jets; A stunning terrazzo floor located throughout the building that contributes to the Port of Oakland's efforts to create a green and sustainable operating environment since it requires far less maintenance and is more durable than traditional carpeting; An 8-foot by 21-foot video wall featuring finished works by local artists commissioned by the Port of Oakland; New restrooms - facilities for women and men are bright, airy and equipped with ADA-compatible stalls that are roomy enough for a traveler and his/her carry-on luggage or a young child. Diaper changing stations are provided in each; and Two down escalators and an elevator that offer more capacity to quickly transport travelers from arrival gates to baggage pick-up.

This project is part of OAK's $300 million Terminal Improvement Program begun in 2004 and is designed to add even more convenience, security and service to the travel experience. In addition to the newly-opened baggage claim facility, the program encompasses a new seven-gate concourse extension and waiting areas to Terminal 2; expanded ticketing and security facilities; and a modern, centralized food, beverage and retail shopping area. Additional improvements to the terminal roadway and curbsides will improve access and ease traffic congestion in front of both terminals. Program completion is expected in 2008.
