Baku - Introduction

Baku is the capital of Azerbaijan and home to 2 million people. It is the largest city in the entire Caucasus region, as well as the most cosmopolitan. It is a port city located on the shore of the Caspian Sea along the Absheron Peninsula. Azerbaijan is rich in oil and gas and has a long history of producing oil.

The city of Baku dates back 5,000 years and the name is said to mean ’’God’s City’’. Supposedly, the prophet Zarathustra/Zoroaster spent 20 years in a cave in this area. Thus, Zoroastrianism emerged here in the 7th century BC.

Central Baku is a picturesque walled old town - fortress with ancient houses and narrow winding lanes. Two major landmarks are the Palace Shirvanshahs, dating from the 15th century AD and the Maiden Tower, from the 6th century BC, restored in 12th century AD. Modern Baku sprawls from outside the walls towards the Bay of Baku. Among other places of interest include museums, mosques, some open to Non-Muslims, the Alley of Martyrs and the Museum of Carpets and Applied Arts.

The city combines several influences, from Shahs and Soviets to the Oil Industry. The architecture displays a range of styles, ranging from Baroque to Art Nouveau palaces, testifying to its old glory. The city, however, is renewing its facade with lush gardens and fountains, and a charming seaside promenade.

Baku boasts an incredibly vibrant nightlife, chic boutiques, nice restaurants and comfortable cafés. In addition, its mild climate and close proximity to the beaches make it a popular holiday destination for the Russians.
