 ETIQUETTE - JAMAICA : : : : :

         FACTS AT A GLANCE >>
The Jamaican tradition was developing under strong influences of first British and later American culture. Thus, the appropriate behavior on the island understands nothing different from the western standards. However, it is good to keep in mind that most local people live in terrible poverty and they are sometimes irritated against those who can spend great sums of money merely on entertainment. Aggressiveness and violence on the island are also a result of its somber history, full of pain and troubles of slavery, rebellions and civil wars.

Jamaican authorities are very anxious about the safety of the tourists. They have spent a great deal of money and managed to provide security for all tourist resorts and traditional destinations. However, one cannot guarantee your safety throughout the island. The extremes of irritations are mostly evident around big resorts and in the slums of big cities, especially Kingston. Harassment, including sexual harassment, may sometimes reach infuriating levels.
