The official currency of Jamaica is the Jamaican dollar, divided into 100 cents. Foreign currency in banknotes or travelers' checks is best exchanged at major banks or licensed moneychangers. Money can also be changed at airport and hotel cashiers, but their exchange rates are not favorable. Black-market traders offer the best rates, but as it is not a legal deal, mind the trickery. Goods and services are usually purchased in Jamaican dollars, although prices are sometimes posted in U.S. dollars and then converted. European currencies are not commonly accepted, US dollars being the most readily acceptable currency. Most major credit cards are widely accepted.
Basic food and accommodation costs in Jamaica are reasonable enough, when compared to other Caribbean islands, while they depend much on the style in which you prefer to travel. A budget meal costs around US$ 2- 5, a restaurant meal is $10-20, a budget hotel is $15-25 and a mid-range hotel is $30-60. For a traveler on a budget, living on $25-30 per day is quite realistic. For more comfort and restaurant dinners add at least another $50. However, Jamaica guarantees unlimited possibilities for emptying a thick wallet. Plush hotels, exclusive restaurants and unique nightlife can exceed the most daring fantasies.
A 10% tip is expected in most hotels and restaurants, however, if restaurants add a 10% to 15% service charge, there is no need to leave an additional tip. Most prices in shops are fixed but bargaining at street stalls and markets is expected. While bargaining, try to keep things good-natured - this common rule is especially important here, as the locals can be rather brusque and aggressive. |
