         FACTS AT A GLANCE >>
Malaysia has a rich and an ethnically diverse cultural heritage, which is expressed through many traditional festivals. These festivals usually have religious roots. Islamic holidays, such as the fasting month of Ramadan and the festivities at its close (Hari Raya Aidilfitri), are the most important yearly events in the Malay calendar. Chinese New Year festivities and Lion Dances, complete with traditional street opera, are among the noisiest and most colorful cultural events in Malaysia. Indian communities are well known for their sacred temple dances and their vibrant festivals and processions, especially during Thaipusam in late January. Thousands of devotees pierce their bodies as an act of penitence during this event. The indigenous tribes of Sabah and Sarawak hold harvest festivals, which are characterized by rice wine drinking, abundant feasting and dancing.
