The standard unit of Malaysia is the Malaysian Ringgit (US$ 1 = RM 3.9), which is divided into 100 sen. There are RM 1, RM 2, RM 5, RM 10, RM 20, RM 50 and RM 100 notes and 1 sen, 10 sen, 20 sen, 50 sen and RM1 coins.
There are about 40 commercial banks in Malaysia, both local and foreign. Most banks have branches in major cities and towns, and offer good facilities for foreign exchange. Foreign currency and traveler's checks may be changed at all commercial banks during normal banking hours. Malaysian banks typically charge around US$ 2-3 for foreign exchange transactions. Licensed moneychangers at the airport and within the city sometimes offer better rates and do not charge a commission. Hotels and major department stores also accept traveler's checks, but their exchange rates are not favorable.
Basic food, accommodation and public transport costs in Peninsular Malaysia are extremely reasonable, when compared to Western countries, while those of Eastern Malaysia can be as much as 50% higher. A budget meal costs around US$ 3- 4, a restaurant meal is $8-15, a budget hotel is $8-20 and a mid-range hotel is $30-50. For a traveler on a budget, living on $15-20 per day is quite possible, while the amount of US$ 25 is more realistic. There are no limits to emptying a thick wallet. Malaysia's plush hotels, swanky restaurants and exclusive nightclubs can conform to the most fastidious taste.
Tipping in Malaysia is not necessary unless the service rendered is exceptionally good. Most hotels and large restaurants automatically add a 10% service charge in addition to the 5% government tax to the bill (indicated by a ++ sign on menus and rate cards). Tip porters about RM 1 per bag. Taxi drivers are usually not tipped. |
