If you are planning to visit the lowlands of the Amazon Basin it is recommended to be vaccinated against yellow fever and malaria. Altitude mountain sickness, called soroche, happens at the higher Andean areas.
Drinking bottled water is strongly recommended. Meat and fish should be well cooked and served hot. Avoid pork, raw salads and mayonnaise as well as uncooked vegetables and unpeeled fruit. Avoid the food served by street vendors.
