The new official currency since 1991 is the nuevo sol. Bill notes are in denominations of 100, 50, 20, and 10 Nuevos Soles. Also there are coins of 5, 2 and 1 soles, as well as centimos of .055, 0.20, 0.10 and 0.05.
Costs in Peru are a bit higher than Ecuador and Bolivia and less than in Brazil and Argentina. Cusco and Lima are the most expensive cities.
Banks, hotels and shops easily accept US Dollars, but changing currencies other than US Dollars can be difficult. Exchange can be made at banks, casas de cambio (exchange offices) or with street-changers.
Credit cards as American Express, Mastercard, Diners Club and Visa are widely accepted in the main cities. They are commonly charged an 8% commission.
All major banks in Lima will cash travelers checks. Cashing traveler checks outside the main cities is a more difficult and slower process.
An 18% general tax is automatically charged. At the airport, the traveler is to pay a departure tax (US$25 for the international flight, S 10 for the domestic flight). |
