         FACTS AT A GLANCE >>
Peru is a country where different races and cultures met. Today, 23 million descendants of Europeans, Asians and Africans inhabit Peru. Half the population is under 2l.

Peru has a wide ethnic mixture composed mainly by a 54% Indian, 32% Mestizo, 12% White and Spanish descent, 2% Black and Asian minority. The majority lives in the coastal area where the big cities and economic centers are. Indians and Mestizo live mostly in the Andes.

Spanish and Quechua (Inka´s language) are the two official languages in Peru. Although Spanish is the main one, Quechua is widely spoken in the Andes. English is spoken in the main touristic destinations and places.

The country is predominantly Roman Catholic, another legacy of the Colonial period. This has not kept sierra populations, however, from maintaining some Inca rituals and mixing them with Catholic festivals.
