The official currency of Venezuela is the Bolívar. Most banks and exchange houses will change cash and travelers cheques. Also some hotels have exchange offices, but their exchange rates are often less favorable.
While travellers cheques are no doubt safer, in the interior it may be impossible to change them, so some cash is to be preferred. The black market, when it exists, should be avoided due to the risk of receiving forged notes. American Express is the best-known credit card, but Diners, MasterCard and Visa are increasingly accepted. It is increasingly possible to obtain money with ATM machines, but we have had reports of fraud. |
