LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW!

Hopkins Officials Say “Bring it on!”

CLEVELAND, October 12, 2006 — It’s cold, then it’s hot, then it’s cold…it’s

autumn and officials at Cleveland Hopkins are grinning when they think of what

might be coming in the months ahead, thanks to a new addition to the family.

It’s called a Multifunction Tracking Tow Broom (MTTB). Weighing in at 60,000

pounds, and reaching speeds of forty-five miles per hour, she’s the newest snowfighting

machine in the airport’s arsenal, and with her arrival Hopkins crews are

looking forward to breaking some of their own impressive records!

“For years, our crews have consistently done a fantastic job in keeping us

operational during some of the worst winter weather,” says Airport Director Ricky

D. Smith. “Keeping the runways clear means flight operations experience little if

any delays which directly impacts our carriers’ budgets. This new machine

simultaneously performs operation of four of our other machines, saving us time

and literally saving money for everyone.”

The unit is actually customized to meet the needs and specifications of Hopkins.

It not only combines the efficiency of four separate machines into only one, the

MTTB moves nearly four times faster than normal snow removal equipment,

taking the snow cover down to the pavement with fewer passes which opens a

runway up for service much faster. Additionally, since the unit requires only one

operator, other crew members are freed to utilize additional equipment in other

areas of the airfield at the same time, again allowing normal flight operations to

resume in much less time.

An additional benefit to the machine is the cost savings the airport will realize in

the reduced amount of chemicals needed to maintain a clean surface because

the new machine is so efficient. “We need to do everything we can to keep

costs as low as possible for our carriers and our passengers while still providing

the best service possible,” says Smith. “We’re excited about the prospects for

this coming winter.”
