Bogotá - Introduction

Bogotá is the capital and largest city of Colombia, and home to approximately 8.8 million people. It lies on an elevated plateau in the Andes mountain range, at 2,600 meters above sea level. It is a huge, sprawling metropolis, and a world-class urban destination.

The city has had an unseemly reputation, but has since cleaned up its act and is becoming a popular urban destination. It has a wealth of museums, historic houses, and cultural events, as well as a lively nightlife.

The city is home to many renowned universities. It is also the country’s financial and political center, where numerous international multi-corporations headquarter.

The southern part of the city is marked by sprawling poor shantytowns, while the north is the most modern part of the city and is populated by upscale shopping and financial centers. Downtown is located in the central part of the city and hosts the majority of the historic sights.
