Caracas - Introduction

Caracas is the capital of Venezuela, located in the north of the country, between the lush green Avila Mountain and the sea, and located 15 km from the Caribbean coast. Supporting a population of over 3 million, Caracas is a fast-paced and cosmopolitan city, bristling with skyscrapers springing up from a sea of low-rise buildings.

Caracas is home to Venezuela’s Simon Bolivar international airport and thus serves as the gateway to the country. The city itself has a number of interesting museums, good restaurants and glitzy shopping malls, as well as a thriving art scene and lively nightlife.

To escape the bustling metropolitan jungle, on the northern edge of the city is the Parque Nacional El Ávila offering hiking trails in fragrant forests. In harsh contrast are the surrounding shanty towns and care should be taken in certain areas.
