San Salvador - Introduction

San Salvador is the capital of El Salvador, the smallest country in Central America. It lies on the coast of the Pacific Ocean and borders Guatemala and Honduras.

The city of San Salvador is home to approximately 2 million people, and lies in the central part of the country, at the foot of the San Salvador volcano. The valley in which the city is based is known for intense earthquake activity, hence the name, Valley of the Hammocks.

San Salvador was founded by Pedro de Alvarado in 1525 and has a long history but many of its historic buildings have been destroyed in numerous earthquakes. Today San Salvador is a cosmopolitan city with a blend of modern and colonial buildings, wide boulevards and monuments. The more affluent neighborhoods are full of shops, modern hotels, restaurants, bars, clubs and cafés, while the outskirts are lined with hundreds of poor shantytowns.

Downtown is home to several prominent public buildings, including The Metropolitan Cathedral, The National Palace, the National Treasury, and the National Theater, as well as the charming colonial church of St Ignatius Loyola. The city is a good base to explore the country, as it is also a major transportation hub.

The country is rich in the diversity of its attractions: volcanoes, beaches, forests and reefs, as well as its Mayan heritage. Luckily, the country is still unclogged by tourism.
