Skopje - introduction

Skopje is the capital of Macedonia, a former Yugoslavian Republic. The city is home to approximately 700,000 people, which is a quarter of the country's entire population. It is also the cultural and economic hub of the country.

Skopje has a rich and long history dating back over 2,500 years, and has been inhabited by various nations throughout its history. Byzantine, Roman and Ottoman influences mix in this eclectic city, where you can find Orthodox churches, monasteries, mosques, bazaars and Ottoman baths, alongside communist-era housing blocks that are typical in Eastern European cities.

The city lies on both sides of the Vardar River, and is connected via numerous bridges, the best known being the old arched stone bridge (‘Kamen Most’).

Skopje is lively and sociable and is filled with bars and cafés, as well as restaurants that offer delicious local fare, reflecting Greek and Turkish as well as Balkan influences. The city has beautiful green spaces but it is also lively at night, and has great bars and restaurants where locals like to hang out.
