Dakar - introduction

Dakar is the capital and largest city of Senegal. Located on the western African Atlantic coast, it serves as an important port, handling traffic between Africa and Europe. Dakar was for a long time under French colonial rule and that influence can still be felt today in the form of colonial architecture and numerous outdoor cafés.

The lively, noisy city has a vibrant music scene, a large selection of restaurants and hotels, busy street markets where you can buy pretty much anything immaginable, and several interesting attracitons, among which is the greatly recommended Institut Fondamental d'Afrique Noir (IFAN) Museum. Perhaps best of all, and wonderfully close to the city, are several beautiful unspoilt beaches.

The nearby island of Gorée is the area's best known tourist landmark. It was once the epicenter of slave-trade and is now a UNESCO Historical Monument where the past horrors can be observed in the slave dealers' apartments, museums, and the most visited, the Maison des Esclaves (Slave House).
