Jakarta - Introduction

Jakarta is the capital and largest city in Indonesia, located on the northwest coast of the nation's fifth biggest island Java, the most densely populated island and center of Indonesia's culture and economy.

Jakarta is a sprawling metropolis, home to 10 million people. Most travelers use it as the entry point to the island resorts of Indonesia; however, this big chaotic city has more than a few interesting sights to be explored, good shopping, cosmopolitan nightlife and excellent restaurants.

The city is a mix of high-rises with masses of low rises sprawling in between and there is a stark contrast between the glitzy malls and dingy streets. The city lacks a center so sights are scattered around. Nevertheless, Jakarta gives a telling glimpse into the diversity of Indonesia.

Some of the sights include Kota, the old colonial Dutch district, the Orchid garden and the Indonesian National Museum.
