Erevan - Introduction

Yerevan is the capital of Armenia, a southern Caucasus country and is the smallest of all the former Soviet republics. The country borders Turkey, Iran, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. It is also the home of one of the world’s oldest civilizations and was the first country to embrace Christianity, in 300 A.D. The city of Yerevan is home to 1.2 million people and lies in the Ararat plain along the Hrazdan River.

Yerevan is one of the world’s longest continuously inhabited cities. It underwent massive reconstruction during Soviet rule, gaining a neo-classical look sectioned by wide avenues.

The majority of tourist sights are concentrated in the city center, which combines Soviet, Belle Epoque and Beaux-Arts architecture. It is also called the Pink City due to the pink hue of stone mostly used for construction.
The city is spread on seven hills and features numerous parks and fountains. Among the most important sights are the Opera house, the Cathedral, the Mother Armenia monument, the National Gallery of Armenia and the Museum of Genocide.
